Liszt recital (for Associació de Concerts de Reus, 150th anniversary of Liszt)

(Birthplace of the legendary architect Antoni Gaudí)

'Due to the performer's illness, the concert that pianist Jorge Bolet was scheduled to give last week [17 April] for the Concert Association at the Teatro Fortuny was postponed; the recital will now take place next Wednesday, the 26th.' Reus Semanario de la Ciudad, 22/4/1961.

As we left the Fortuny Theatre on Wednesday night—or, to be precise, in the early minutes of Thursday—after hearing the virtuoso pianist, a fantastic image began to take shape in our minds until it was vividly, concretely, and clearly imprinted there. It struck us—for fantasy and madness are first cousins—that in the theatre’s upper gallery we had seen a man dressed in nineteenth-century fashion, applauding enthusiastically at the end of every piece, and that this man was none other than Franz Liszt. Naturally, after a necessary rest, reason prevailed and the dream vanished; yet there remained with us the certainty that, had the immeasurable Hungarian pianist been able to attend the concert in body and spirit, he would not have hesitated to shake Jorge Bolet’s hand—and who knows if, stepping down from the lofty pedestal upon which his triumphs as a prodigy had placed him, he might not have embraced the Cuban concert pianist after publicly acknowledging that his own titanic spirit lived on in him. (...) The simple truth is that while Liszt was a powerful, overwhelming pianist—capable of unleashing torrents of notes at the command of his extraordinary fingers, and possessing an impetus and physical strength that Chopin so envied, all of which fit perfectly within the Romantic mould of which he was the undisputed master—no one has captured that expressive, spirited, and exquisite force quite like Jorge Bolet; a force that stirs the soul and thrills the body, where the human and the divine seem to join hands in a shared impulse of total self-giving.'
