'This year Jorge Bolet has returned—tall, erect, with large hands—and, in case anyone remained unconvinced that he is one of the finest pianists of Romantic music, he has just performed—with the Philharmonic conducted by Simón Blech—the two concertos written by Franz Liszt. Both of them! And this under circumstances where either one alone poses a challenge few can successfully meet. (It is true, Mr. Bolet, that you have made your name internationally by playing Liszt’s music, but, in truth, you did not need to proveit so lavishly.) Liszt’s concertos (1839 and 1849)—revised repeatedly by the composer until he was satisfied—are often played as displays of impressive bravura, yet few performers manage to extract their true essence, the spirit their creator imbued in them. Bolet played them with unabashed Romanticism, varying the tempos as if following a narrative arc. (...)
